4th Industrial Revolution Technologies in Hospitality

Choosing for the Master Leading Hospitality Innovation means studying at three great and well-respected institutes, each with their own focus and expertise. In Barcelona the focus is all about technology. One of the Modules you will study is called the ‘4th Industrial Revolution Technologies in Hospitality’.  Dr Albert Fornells is a professor and chair of the Quantitative Methods Department at IQS, Ramon Llull University. In this blog he will share the ins and outs of his module

Dublin

The transformation of hospitality

The focus is on understanding how the 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, such as Artifical Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain, are transforming the hospitality industry. You will also learn to apply these technologies to enhance customer experience, improve operational efficiency, and create innovative business models in the hospitality sector.

Internet is everywhere, no matter the industry nor the country. In the hospitality sector, technology has become at the same time the major ally as well as the main enemy because, in general, it evolves faster than companies prefer. Electronic distribution, mobile applications, customized digital experiences, and a long list of milestones have totally changed the industry. For example, the impact of generative artificial intelligence has been a new twist which has directly affected those companies where the customer engagement and interaction is their main core business.

Understanding the new disruptive technologies

Having said this, this module aims to contribute to better understand how the new disruptive technologies are critical for the future of the sector. By trying to understand what their added values as well as their main barriers are, you will acquire a better digital mindset to embrace the change while also being aware of the potential risks.

In the module you will work on assignments that help you gain insights based on decision driven technologies. The aim is to gather, organize and analyse data from an organization using data analysis tools to identify opportunities and/or issues based on the application of 4th industrial revolution technologies.

A different assignment will focus on writing a proposal of a conceptual solution based on 4th industrial revolution technologies. You will be asked to propose a conceptual solution based on 4th industrial revolution technologies to create added value products, services, or experiences considering the insights from previous class sessions.

This module aims to contribute to better understand how the new disruptive technologies are critical for the future of the sector. By trying to understand what their added values as well as their main barriers are, you will acquire a better digital mindset to embrace the change while also being aware of the potential risks.

Trends and developments in the industry

The content of the module and the assignments you’ll work on will take account the latest trends and developments in the industry. As mentioned before, these technologies develop rapidly so staying on the trends is key. Dr. Albert Fornells: “I read this very interesting report about trends in 2024 from the technology perspective and I totally agree with them.”

Dr. Albert Fornells is a full professor and chair of the Quantitative Methods Department at IQS, Ramon Llull University.  His professional career has been linked to research, teaching and academic affairs at different universities since 2003.  He holds a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. with honors in computer engineering and his research interests are data science, decision support systems based on artificial intelligence as well as the application of new disruptive technologies in the new challenges of society where data literacy, digital transformation, sustainability, and innovation are more required than ever. The results of his research have been published in several journals with high impact factor and international conferences. Moreover, he has lead many research projects based on applying artificial intelligence and data mining for creating decision support systems and he has also supervised different PhD thesis. As lecturer, he teaches subjects related to artificial intelligence, data mining, mathematics, engineering and software development, project management, computer graphics, information systems and electronic distribution, as well as the use and application of Internet technologies.
